چکیده

ABSTRACT In this paper, we propose a novel method for beam hardening correction in polychromatic transmission tomography. A family of polynomials is firstly determined in a training phase, which forms a complete set in the sense of X-ray physics of medical diagnostic imaging. In particular, every polynomial in the set is indexed by a beam hardening factor, i.e. effective atomic number, which is further assigned to specific X-ray penetrating path. In order to successfully accomplish the assignation in an imaging phase, another polynomial is adopted to formulize the mapping relationship between the index of polynomial family and the area density ratio of bone tissue. Here, the area density ratio of bone tissue is calculated after the pre reconstructed image being segmented into soft tissue and bone regions. The mapping polynomial is iteratively approximated by a dedicated HL Consistency (HLC) based nonlinear algorithm. The characteristics of this method include that the polynomial family can cover the variations of both high potential and effective filter of X-ray tube, the beam hardening correction in the imaging phase can adapt the content variations of objects being imaged, and the correction effect is also sophisticated even bowtie filter exists. Performance analysis and related computer simulation show that our HLC based correction is much robust than traditional bone correction to the variants of scale factor lambda0.

CT sinogram-consistency learning for metal-induced beam hardening correction

Purpose: This paper proposes a sinogram-consistency learning method to deal with beamhardening related artifacts in polychromatic computerized tomography (CT). The presence of highly attenuating materials in the scan field causes an inconsistent sinogram, that does not match the range space of the Radon transform. When the mismatched data are entered into the range space during CT reconstructio...

Multi-Material Beam Hardening Correction(MMBHC) in Computed Tomography

In computed tomography (CT), the nonlinear attenuation characteristics of polychromatic X-rays cause beam hardening artifacts in the reconstructed images. State-of-theart methods to correct the beam hardening effect are mostly single material precorrections (e.g. water-precorrection), which are far less efficient when more than one material is present in the field of measurement. The use of tho...

Beam Hardening Correction with an Iterative Scheme Using an Exact Backward Projector and a Polychromatic Forward Projector

In computed tomography (CT), reconstructions from conebeam (CB) data acquired with a polychromatic X-ray device show so called beam hardening artifacts. Beam hardening artifacts are highly undesirable for a medical diagnosis, because details in the reconstructed image are severely disturbed or completely lost. In this work, we demonstrate the significant reduction of beam hardening artifacts by...

Spectrum Binning Approach for Multi-Material Beam Hardening Correction (MMBHC) in CT

In CT, the nonlinear attenuation characteristics of polychromatic X-rays cause beam hardening artifacts in the reconstructed images. When datasets contain multiple materials in the field of scan, the performance of state-of-the-art beam hardening correction approaches is limited by high computational load and reduced correction efficiency. An image based multi-material beam hardening correction...

Towards Beam Hardening Correction for Polychromatic X-ray Ct

High-attenuation object-induced streaking and shadow artifacts in computerized tomography (CT) are somewhat connected to the misfit of the X-ray projection data to the range space of the Radon transform. This misfit is mainly due to the beam hardening factor of the projection data which is unavoidable for polychromatic sources. The major difficulty in dealing with the beam hardening-induced str...
